Glial responses to brain injury

Regulation of postlesional activation of astrocytes by gp130-associated cytokines

Astrocytes activated following CNS lesions provide trophic support for damaged cells and axons, limit the size of the lesion by forming a glial scar and contribute to the removal of cell debris. In this way, their reaction is of crucial importance for the consequences of CNS injuries. The molecular signals regulating the activational state of astrocytes are largely unknown. The goal of our research is to elucidate the role of the gp130-associated cytokines ciliary neurotrophic factor and leukemia inhibitory factor in the activation process. We and others have already shown that activation of the gp130/JAK/Stat3 signaling pathway by these cytokines is essential for astrocytic responses to mechanical brain injuries.
